We met in the most unexpected way, at a backyard party; introduced in passing before the day had a chance to unfold. Almost as soon as we'd said hello, Jacque fell ill and had to leave. For the rest of that year, Richard reached out, again and again, but Jacque wasn't quite ready to be found.

We filled the distance with daily and nightly calls, with texts that carried us from one visit to the next, with dates that became monthly trips to island after island.
